To paraphrase Friends‘ Chandler Bing: “Could there BE a bigger geek movie than The Avengers?”
I don’t think so. The Avengers represents the pinnacle of awesome Hollywood Geekdom. For starters, it was co-written and directed by Joss Whedon, the guy who delivered some of the greatest Geek television series in history. Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Angel? Firefly? Don’t forget he was also one of the minds behind the original Toy Story! If there was anyone on Earth I trusted to bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to life, it was Whedon. So much so that when I heard he’d been hired to direct the movie I thought it was a prank for a long time.
Second, Marvel has been very deliberate in building up it’s movie universe leading to this movie. Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger have been laying the individual stones in the Yellow Brick Road that leads to The Avengers and done a pretty good job of ensuring that we go into this movie already caring about these characters.
