Guys. My life changed forever this morning.
I happened to catch a commercial for Dish Networks new Hopper DVR and immediately rushed online to find out more about it. An hour later, I had scheduled my installation for Monday morning.
This new system of theirs, if it’s anything like the way they are advertising it, represents a big leap forward in home DVR technology and is exactly the solution I’ve been looking for here at Castle Wallin.
Here’s a basic rundown: In your living room you have the Hopper. It’s a new DVR with a whopping 2TB hard drive (promising up to 250 hours of HD recording, over 1,000 standard def). It has a 750mhz processor, the fastest in any commercial DVR system, which promises zippy menu and remote control response. It boasts Bluetooth technology for pairing up headphones. It has a new feature called “Prime Time Anytime” which allows SIX SHOWS to be recorded in HD simultaneously. Four of those are the local Networks (CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC) and an additional two programs of your choosing.
Prime Time Anytime automatically records every show on every local Network in Prime Time and holds it for 8 days. Let me repeat: Every single show the big networks show from 7pm till 10pm, every day, automatically. PLUS two more recordings of your choosing on any channel. With this system you’ll never have to pick and choose which shows you’re going to record or watch live. You’ve got them all there waiting for you automatically. Genius.
This is made even sweeter with the addition of “Joeys”. You can add up to three Joey receivers to your Hopper, which allows you to watch live HD and all of your DVR’d HD recordings in additional rooms of the house. With one Hopper and three Joeys we can have all four of our HD tv’s, in different rooms of the house, watching TV or DVR recordings simultaneously. Or you can use it to begin watching a show in the living room and finish it in the bedroom.
That’s a basic rundown of the new system. Mine is being installed this coming Monday, so I should have an actual review posted later in the week and will definitely be talking about it on the next podcast.

Nice review! I was excited for this system a while back after hearing the news of it from some of my coworkers at DISH, so I’m ecstatic to finally have one. How do you like the Hopper so far? I just got mine installed a couple weeks ago as well and really love what it can do so far. PrimeTime Anytime is definitely my favorite aspect of the Hopper since my husband and I watch a lot of programs on those four networks. We used to argue about what we would record or not, so now with it and the three tuners, I’m glad to say it’s an argument of the past, lol. We haven’t even put a dent in recording space either!

Why don’t CBS, FOX, and NBC execs want consumers to enjoy commercial-free TV? It’s what we want! I’m a customer and employee of Dish, and I think AutoHop is great because you can easily watch commercial-free TV. A well known consumer advocacy group, Public Knowledge, agrees that people should have the right to control how they watch TV. They’re taking a stand for consumers by creating a petition that tells CBS, FOX, and NBC media to keep their hands out of your living room and DVR.
