Time once again for another installment of Movies You Have Not Seen But Should. This week we will look at the 2013 documentary 1, narrated by actor Michael Fassbender.

The film looks at the history of Formula One, one of the most famous racing organizations in existence. They stage “Grand Prix” races all around the world in countries such as Great Britain, France, Brazil, Japan, Germany and others including the United States. Probably the most famous race is the Grand Prix of Monaco in Monte Carlo.

The history of Formula One is both beautiful and tragic. The speed and beauty of the Formula One cars against the backdrop of the scenic cities the cars raced through, there was also the huge risk of fatal crashes. Formula One was known for such crashes in its history and for years has had to deal with this fact. This documentary looks at both sides, the beauty and the tragedy.

Along with Fassbender’s work as narrator, there are archival interviews as well as new interviews from those who lived through racing in Formula One. There is also focus on the racer Ayrton Senna, whose death in 1994 helped to push for safer racing in Formula One.

The film is directed by Paul Crowder. Crowder is well known documentary film director and editor. His works  include directing The Real RevolutionariesAmazing Journey: The Story of the Who and Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos. 1 released in theaters in North America on October 1, 2013.

1 is available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Amazon Instant Streaming. Even if you’re not a racing fan, you’ll enjoy the story this documentary tells, along with the great work of narration that Michael Fassbender does. 1 is worth checking out. It’s one that you may not have seen, but you should.
