Brightest Star

It’s time once again for Movies You Have Not Seen But Should. This week, we will take a look at the 2014 romantic dramedy Brightest Star. The film stars include Clark Gregg, Allison Janney, Chris Lowell and Rose McIver.

The film is a look into the life of The Boy (played by Lowell, best known for his role on the TV show Private Practice). When we meet him, he has woken up outside his now ex-girlfriend’s Charlotte (played by McIver, who has recently played Tinker Bell on the TV show Once Upon a Time) with a hangover. Not only that, Charlotte has rented the apartment out to a couple, Ray and Lita. Lita (played by Jessica Szchor, best known for her role on the TV show Gossip Girl and who also had a role in the film The Internship) is a musician and Ray works at a bar. Feeling sorry for The Boy, the couple decide to take him in and let him crash at the apartment.

The Boy then tells the story in flashbacks of how he and Charlotte met. It was in college in an astronomy class taught by Dr. Lambert (played by Peter Jacobsen, best known for his role on the TV show House). For The Boy, it was love at first sight. For Charlotte, it was a different story. But over time, they fell in love and then told the story of the relationship up to the breakup. Meanwhile, Ray and Lita break up. Lita falls in love with The Boy and helps him get a job at the firm that her dad Mr. Markovic (played by Gregg, best known as Agent Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) runs. Things seem to have turned around for The Boy.

However, The Boy doesn’t feel satisfied. He feels like there’s something more out there. He runs into Charlotte again and ends up cheating on Lita with Charlotte. He then quits his job and tries to pursue astronomy, something he had been interested in since that class in college. However, just having a liberal arts degree, he can only get a janitorial job at an observatory out in the middle of nowhere. He goes to try and find himself out there working under the Astronomer at the observatory (played by Janney, best known for her role on the TV show The West Wing). What happens to The Boy? Does he find himself and figure out what he loves to do? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The film had a limited release in theaters on January 31, 2014. It also released on video on demand at the same time and later a DVD release.

Brightest Star is available on DVD and Amazon Instant Streaming. It’s one of those films that’s simple but tells a good story. With all the recent films to come out this year, this may have been one that wasn’t on your radar but it’s worth checking out. It’s one that you may not have seen, but you should.
