Elizabethtown

Time once again for Movies You Have Not Have Seen But You Should. This week, we will look at the 2005 dramedy Elizabethtown. The film’s stars include Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst and Susan Sarandon.

The film centers around the character of Drew Baylor (played by Bloom). Drew worked as a shoe designer. He lost his job due to a bad design of a shoe which led to a loss of millions by his company. After he gets fired, he then finds out from his mom and sister that his dad passed away. He is then tasked with taking his dad’s favorite blue suit and retrieving the body from Elizabethtown, Kentucky for cremation.

On the flight over from California, Drew meets Claire (played by Dunst). Claire is a flight attendant who strikes up a conversation with Drew because he’s one of the few people on the flight. As she learns why he’s on the flight, she tries to be helpful by providing a map of Elizabethtown and also gives him her phone number.

Once Drew gets to Elizabethtown, he interacts with his estranged family. They tease him for being a “California Boy” and don’t want to go along with Drew’s mom’s wishes about cremation. They want Drew’s dad to be buried in Elizabethtown. In the midst of dealing with the death of his father, the loss of his job & family issues, Drew calls up Claire who rushes down and meets up with Drew. They develop a relationship. But given Drew’s track record, will it last? Will Drew’s dad end up cremated or buried? How does Drew’s mom and sister react to all this? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.

Susan Sarandon plays Drew’s mom Hollie. Other stars in the film include Judy Greer (who plays Drew’s sister Heather), Alec Baldwin (who plays Drew’s boss at the beginning of the film), Jessica Biel (who plays Drew’s girlfriend at the beginning of the film) and even famous chef Paula Deen (who plays one of Drew’s aunts).

The film was directed by Cameron Crowe. Crowe also directed such films as Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire. Interesting fact, one of the producers of the film was Tom Cruise. It debuted at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, 2005. It opened in theaters in North America on October 14, 2005. Though it got mixed reviews by critics, famous critic Roger Ebert did give it three out of four stars.

Elizabethtown is available on DVD and Amazon Instant Streaming. If you’re a fan of Orlando Bloom or Kirsten Dunst, this is a movie to check out. It’s a fun movie that has both deep and lighthearted moments. It’s also a good romantic story as well. It’s one of those that you may not have seen, but you should.
