Ponies are coming: check out our preview for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Season 4!

With all the problems going on in our world right now, I think we can all agree: we need a little more Pony in our lives.  Seriously.  If our world leaders would just sit down together once a week and watch Friendship is Magic, they’d learn a lot about being decent human beings….wait, that’s another soapbox altogether.  What I’m trying to say is that you should be getting all nervouscited because My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic returns for it’s FOURTH season this coming Saturday on The Hub Network, picking up right where Season 3 left off.  I can say with confidence after seeing the first two episodes of the season that we are in good hands here, bronies.

(Season 3 spoilers, ahoy)

If you don’t remember, Twilight Sparkle underwent a transformation at the end of season 3 and became the fourth alicorn princess in the mythos.  So now, you’ve got Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Twilight, who we find at the start of season 4 trying to deal with the implications of both her new duties as a princess and her new wings. (Which also factored into Equestria Girls a teensy bit).  Without giving too much away, it seems that Twilight isn’t having the best time adjusting, while her friends in Ponyville have to face one of the biggest challenges of the series without her.  Twilight hasn’t changed, for those that were worried, and she still seems to struggle with her sense of self worth and confidence.  The story of the first two episodes DOES advance her character, but I’ll wait for you to see it yourself without spoiling it.

As a whole, these two episodes do a much better job to intro the season than last years romp through the Crystal Empire.  Of course, the creative team was working with a shortened season, (that we now know was shorted because hey, Equestria Girls) so that can be forgiven.  The animation is as always spot on, with plenty of gags, but seems to have a bump in quality as well, as there are tiny traces of light effects, reflections, and other assorted special effect doodads that really haven’t shown up in former seasons.  Almost all the Mane 6 get equal screen time, though the plot revolves around Twilight (of course).  I don’t have the mention the voice acting, but I will, as Pony fans can expect the usual high quality that all the talent gives to the show.

All in all, I believe MLP fans both young and old will enjoy the premier when they sit down to watch it.  Both my daughter and son were with me while I watched and they were thoroughly into it, laughing and nodding along with the characters.  Even my son, who complained about having to watch it, was captured within the first 5 minutes.  I also like that newcomers to the series can jump on, as the story has a feel of a new beginning, and even takes a moment to introduce the characters a little bit without wasting time on rehashing.  I’m really looking forward to the rest of season 4 after such a solid start, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store as the end of episode 2 sets up  a running theme throughout the rest of the season, something we haven’t really seen yet in MLP.

Be sure to tune in Saturday morning at 7 PST/ 10 EST for the first episode, with new eps following every week after that, only  on The Hub Network!
