Random Netflix Movie of the Week – Frank

3

Netflix has some weird movies. I mean some really strange films.

The movie I chose this week was one that had been on my recommended list for a while (I had been disinclined to give it a chance because it…well, it was a huge mask head and it looked dumb), but I finally gave in and decided to give it a chance.

So, Jon is the main character. Jon is an aspiring singer-songwriter who happens upon a band in the street where their keyboardist is trying to drown himself. He happens to (of course) mention that he plays keyboard as well, and boom – he’s hired to perform that same night with the band.

Putting aside how incredibly unrealistic that entire scenario is, I kept watching. Jon shows up that night and finds that the band is fronted by this guy in a huge deadmau5-ish head. His name is Frank.

The gig goes well, presumably. I was a little confused. Jon ends up going away with the band to this woodsy vacationy retreat, where they apparently are going to stay until they finish their new album.

Jon tweets and blogs about all his experiences, Frank waxes very enlightened hipster poetic about a tuft of carpet fiber, and pretty much no music gets written. The group is the very essence of self-important artists and frankly (see what I did there?), the music they did play was a little grating.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is also in this film, by the way. She is a troubled vocalist who is smitten with Frank, and she pretty much despises Jon from the start.

Somehow these people get booked to perform at SXSW. Before this performance, the entire band gets all fussy and quits when they find out that Jon has been broadcasting their interactions and they are YouTube sensations.

I can’t really get into the rest of the story without spoiling the movie, but it continues being angsty and odd pretty much the whole way to the end.

There are GLOWING reviews for this movie on IMDb. Glowing. To each his own, I suppose. Give it a watch this weekend and let me know what you think.

Apparently I liked it a lot more than you did. I didn’t think they were self important (except for Jon of course) but we’re trying to create for the sake of creation. I loved Frank because he was trying to transcend everything, including himself. Plus I love both Fassbender and Gleason, so I was probably predisposed to like it.

    The music was grating though.
