Big Miracle

It’s time once again for Movies You Have Not Have Seen But You Should. For this week’s installment, we will look at the 2012 drama Big Miracle. The film’s stars include Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, and Kristen Bell.

This film is based on the book Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event by Tom Rose. That book chronicled the true story of Operation Breakthrough. Operation Breakthrough was an international effort to rescue trapped grey whales trapped in ice up near the Arctic Circle around Point Barrow, Alaska in 1988.

Adam Carlson (played by Krasinski) was a local news reporter who enjoyed his work and his life up in Alaska. He did though aspire to bigger and better things as well in the news business. He dreamed of doing national news but at the same time loved Alaska. When he gets word from some Inuit tribe members about some trapped grey whales, he investigates. His report goes 1980s viral and gets picked up by the national news teams. It then becomes a huge story as people around the country (and the world) want to know more about the situation.

Carlson enlisted the help of his ex-girlfriend Rachel Kramer (played by Barrymore) who was involved in Greenpeace. At the same time, people from across the country come up to Point Barrow. This includes news reporter Jill Gerard (played by Bell) who was trying to get the scoop on the whales and get her big break. It becomes a circus up in Point Barrow as the world’s attention is drawn to the whales.

It becomes a race against the clock to save the whales. The longer the whales were trapped in the ice, the less likely the chance the whales will be alive. Will they be able to save the whales in time? You’ll have to watch to find out.

The film also stars Stephen Root, Rob Riggle, Dermot Mulroney, Ted Danson and Kathy Baker. It received favorable reviews including having a 74% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It debuted in theaters on February 3, 2012.

Big Miracle is available on DVD, Blu-Ray and Amazon Instant Streaming. If you’re looking to watch a good family film, this is one to check out. If you’re a fan of John Krasinski, you’ll enjoy this film. It’s a fun heartwarming film that you may not have seen, but you should.
